The 16-year-old sailed through his room audition, with the judges praising his strong stage charisma, but unfortunately he gave a lacklustre performance at Wembley.
Giles sang a rendition of Jackie Wilson's 'Reet Petite' for the audience and judges, but at one stage he forgot the lyrics and seemed unsure about his audition.
Knowing Giles was a fantastic performer, the panel decided to give him one more chance and put him through to bootcamp.
"That song was a car crash," Gary told him, before asking to "have a word" back stage.
"I want you to go really far in this, that's why I was being tough on you," he said.
"You have got to wake up; you have got to get your head in it.
"What most people have when they walk out there is 90 percent voice and 10 percent charisma - at the moment you have got too much charisma and we need to get the vocals up to that level."
Speaking after his audition, Giles admitted: "I think I got a bit cocky with my performance.
"I thought I could go out there and smash hit, but obviously I didn't do that.
"Thankfully, Gary came backstage to see me after and gave me advice. He reminded me I had to take it more seriously and the fact that he had that faith in me was a real reality check."
You have got so much old school soul inside of you, this is your moment.
Louis Walsh to Paul Akistar
Meanwhile shy singer Paul Akistar earned himself a standing ovation from the judging panel following his rendition of Christina Aguilera's 'A Song For You'.
The 24-year-old impressed the judges at his room audition, even though Sharon Osbourne felt he did not put enough of a performance into it.
But after his arena audition, she told him: "Paul that was just amazing, it was really fantastic.
Nicole was equally impressed, commenting: "You didn't come to play, you came to take it and that's what you did.
Gary added: "I love the way you came on the stage, you are a quiet, unassuming guy and then all of a sudden the music and the power it gives you took the whole room by storm.
The X Factor returns to UTV on Saturday at 8.20pm when the successful acts take on bootcamp.
