The Take That singer, who is mentoring the Groups category, was giving his feedback to three-piece vocal band Rough Copy, when he dropped the bombshell that he would not be returning to the show next year.
After Rough Copy closed the show with their performance of Phil Collins' 'In The Air Tonight', Gary told them: "I have been here for three years and I am so glad that for my last year on the show I get to mentor you.
He added: "You are amazing, you are sensational, I love your courage and your charisma, it's everything I want in a group."
Gary's shock revelation resulted in an audible gasp from the X Factor audience.
Speaking after the show, Gary said he will be concentrating on his singing career next year, embarking on a solo tour with his upcoming album Since I Saw You Last.
He said his planned departure has made him even more determined to win the competition this year.
I've had an amazing time on X Factor these past three years. A show like this needs to stay fresh and exciting so it's a great opportunity for someone to come in and take the show past its incredible ten year anniversary.
He said: "Next year is looking to be a very busy year for me and The X Factor is a full time job so it felt like the right time to hand over the baton. I've loved being a part of the show and have met and worked with some fantastic people but most importantly, more than ever, I want to go out with the winning act this year. Come on the groups!
An X Factor spokesman added: "As Gary said on the show tonight we can confirm that this will be his last series as a judge on The X Factor.
"We'd like to thank him for an amazing contribution over the last three years. Next year he will be focusing on his own music but until then he will be mentoring the groups and hoping to take one of them all the way to the final and leave on a high."
Meanwhile Rough Copy's performance earned them high praise from the other X Factor Judges.
Nicole Scherzinger said: "You might be the best band I have ever seen on this show. There is something in you that I have not seen in anyone else and I'm including international stars."
Sharon Osbourne told them: "You just delivered; I mean it was a perfect performance", while Louis Walsh called them the "surprise of the night".
He said: "There has to be a gap in the market for a band like this."
