Various local locations will once again double as the land of Westeros depicted in the hit fantasy series, which is currently showing its fourth series in the UK and US.

First Minister Peter Robinson and deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness have.welcomed the announcement by HBO President Michael Lombardo, which will generate "in excess of £20million annually" to the Northern Ireland economy.

The First Minister said: "Continued investment by major production companies such as HBO ensures that Northern Ireland's creative industries continue to lead the way on the world stage.

"This week's season four premiere of Game of Thrones was watched by a record 6.6 million viewers, making it one of HBO's most watched programmes.

"This has both direct and indirect benefits as Northern Ireland continues to establish itself as a prime tourist destination and investment location."

The return of HBO to film the fifth series of Game of Thrones is excellent news and will provide a £20million cash injection to the local economy, create job opportunities and keep our creative industry in the global spotlight.

Martin McGuinness, deputy First Minister.

Mr McGuinness added: "I look forward to seeing the breath taking filming locations including the Glens of Antrim, Downhill Beach and Tollymore Forest beamed around the world."

Series five of Game of Thrones will receive funding from NI Screen, supported by Invest NI and will be part funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

On Tuesday HBO announced the popular programme had been renewed for two further series.

Mr Lombardo said it was "a phenomenon like no other" and said the cast and crew "continue to surpass themselves".

He added: "We look forward to more of their dazzling storytelling."
