Irish actor Colin Farrell has been enjoying a trip home, after insisting the European premiere of his latest film was to be held in Dublin.

The stars of sci-fi action flick Total Recall - a remake of the 1990s release starring Arnold Schwarzenegger - were out in force at the city's Savoy Cinema on Tuesday night.

Farrell, who took his mum Rita to the glitzy event, was joined on the red carpet by his co-stars Jessica Biel and Kate Beckinsdale and by the director of the film - Beckinsdale's husband Len Wiseman.

"For me, selfishly, it's just lovely to come home and have a night like this," Farrell told RTÉ.

"I get to include friends and family and, I suppose, the greater community in Dublin or Ireland that I hail from. So for simple things like that, it's a really cool thing for me."

Total Recall sees factory worker Douglas Quaid (played by Farrell) begin to suspect he's a spy after a visit to Rekall - a company that provides its clients with implanted fake memories of a life they would like to have led - goes wrong and he finds himself on the run.

The movie opened in the US earlier this month, but is due to hit cinema screens across the Northern Ireland and the Republic on 29 August.
