Bereaved by the tragic death of his new wife Gennie, Nikhil has been struggling to come to terms with the loss and has desperately been eying a move out of the village.
But he won't be satisfied with nearby Leeds - he's got a job at a hotel in Toronto in his sights.
"Toronto! It's miles away!" his shocked friend David, played by Matthew Wolfenden, exclaims.
It is indeed - 3,439 miles to be precise, according to Nikhil.
But while the grieving businessman is set to leave the village, is he headed to Canada? And what about baby daughter Molly?
"Have you seen how beautiful Mia Rose, who plays Molly, is? She's amazing," Rik told This Morning's Eamonn and Ruth on Monday.
According to the actor, it has been tough filming such emotionally draining scenes, but he wanted to do justice to the role.
And while the door does remain open for a return, he feels ready - after four years in the Dales - for new challenges.
"I just felt that it was the right time," Rik said.
"I'd never rule out a stint in the States ...
"But I think it's about making the right decision on the right project. Certainly the next character that I'm lucky enough to play has to be different from what I've been playing."
Rik's final scenes as Emmerdale's Nikhil will be aired on UTV on Tuesday evening.
