Sir Elton John marked the 40th anniversary of his hit Rocket Man by recording a special version for astronauts in space.

The singer performed the ballad at his Million Dollar Piano Show in Las Vegas on 17 April - 40 years after it was released - and beamed the video to the International Space Station.

He made the gesture after learning Dutch crew member Andre Kuipers is a big fan of the space-themed track, and regularly played it over the craft's airwaves.

Sir Elton says: "Rocket Man came from those boyhood dreams of travelling beyond the stars. After the single was released, my band and I were invited to the NASA HQ. It was thrilling to find real astronauts liked our song about a fictional astronaut... Our generation was smitten with the excitement of space travel.

"Now, 40 years later, it's amazing to hear from the astronauts at the European Space Agency that they like the song and that it has been on the playlist on the International Space Station. I send my best wishes to ESA and all the crew, and my thanks for keeping those boyhood dreams alive."
