Singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran thrilled his most ardent fans on Monday with a bank holiday lunchtime gig at the pub he used to perform at before he hit the big time.

Sheeran hit the stage at the Steamboat Tavern in Ipswich just before 11am and performed a 45-minute set before racing off for an afternoon show in London.

The singer offered up 50 pairs of free tickets on his Facebook page on Thursday, but the show wasn't publicised until Sunday night in a bid to make sure that only real fans could attend.

Opening the show, Sheeran said: "I haven't played this venue in almost five years (and) it's nice to come back to where it first started.

"Every single fan here has kept the location very quiet because they didn't want anyone else to find out, so it's a very chilled atmosphere."

Sheeran, who grew up in nearby Framlingham, is planning to play three shows in a day to promote his new album X - after his concert in London, he jetted off to Ireland for a gig in Dublin.
