A representative for David Duchovny has shut down rumours the actor is dating his former The X-Files co-star Gillian Anderson following her split from her longtime boyfriend.

Gossip website CelebDirtyLaundry.com sparked the claims after posting an article suggesting the two former colleagues had been "in a serious relationship for some time now" on Wednesday, the day after Anderson confirmed her six-year romance with Mark Griffiths was over.

However, a spokesperson for Duchovny has put a stop to the allegations, telling Celebuzz.com, "It is not true."

Duchovny has been single since separating from his wife Tea Leoni for a second time last year.
