The 19-year-old first auditioned in 2008, when she was just 14, before returning in 2011 and going as far as the Judges' Houses stage, but she was sent home by judge Kelly Rowland.
Melanie decided to try again last year but only managed to get as far as Bootcamp.
Speaking before her audition, Melanie said: "Coming back for the fourth time it's like you are really putting yourself out there.
"But if you look at anybody in the music industry, they have all got so many no's before they got a yes and that's what drives me to keep going.
"I wasn't fully myself (before); I think I am more confident this year."
During her room audition Melanie performed a rendition of Rihanna's 'Diamonds' and won high praise from the judges.
That was absolutely brilliant, the best audition of the day by far, by a mile.
Gary Barlow to Melanie McCabe
Louis, who was visibly emotional when giving the young singer his critique, explained: "I know Melanie and I really want this for her, because I know what it means to her.
"I know your family needs this, I know you need it and I really want it for you."
"It was effortless, controlled and beautiful, but still very honest," said Nicole Scherzinger.
Sharon Osbourne added: "I didn't know what to expect, you're such a tiny little thing and you come in and you are all shy and when you sing you light up.
Melanie received four 'yes' votes from the panel and will now go through to perform in front of 4,000 people at the arena auditions in Wembley Stadium.
Also returning to the X Factor this year was 23-year-old Jade Richards, who, like Melanie, made it as far as Kelly Rowland's Judges' House two years ago.
She is going to be on fire when we go to the arenas.
Nicole Scherzinger speaking about Jade Richards
"Being so close to the live shows and falling at the last hurdle was devastating," Jade admitted before performing Bruno Mars' 'When I Was Your Man' for the judging panel.
"It's a tricky one because this is your third year," Gary Barlow told her.
"What happened the first time? What happened the second time? Is it just going to happen again? But I don't think it is."
Louis added: "I think you've got your mojo back, I thought it was a fantastic audition."
Meanwhile 17-year-old Amy Mottram, who made it to Tulisa's Judge's House last year, and girl group Dolly Rockers, who were unsuccessful at Louis' Judge's House in 2009, all made it through to the next stage of the competition.
Saturday's most impressive acts audition again at Wembley on Sunday at 8pm on UTV.
