The actress recently announced she would not be resuming her role as scheming lady's maid O'Brien.
She said: "I signed up to do three series and that was all I wanted to do.
"I talked it through with my family and it was the right decision for all of us. I had great fun doing it but I just didn't want to do it anymore. I decided this before we even did the last series. When I stop loving something, I stop doing it."
However, speaking on This Morning on Tuesday, Finneran told presenters Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby there was a possibility she could return.
She said: "The door has been left open to return," adding: "We don't know what happens to her."
She may well fly back on her broomstick at some point.

During her three years on Downton Abbey, O'Brien has schemed and plotted to get her own way, often at the expense of others.
The worldwide success of the series has meant the cast have become recognisable in most parts of the world, but Siobhan says she doesn't have to worry too much.
She said: "The programme is massive all over the world."
"I don't get recognised too often as O'Brien which is great. But then I don't often go out in that wig so I get away with it", she joked.
Siobhan is now playing nurse Mandy in the latest series of the BBC's The Syndicate.
