Pete Doherty and Robyn Whitehead. Whitehead, who recently made a film about Doherty, died as a result of an overdose.
Troubled singer Peter Doherty has said he was shocked and saddened by the "tragic death" of a young member of the Goldsmith dynasty, Robyn Whitehead, who recently made a film about him.

A spokeswoman for Doherty said: "Peter wishes to convey his condolences to Robin's family and her close friends at this very difficult time."

Whitehead, 27, granddaughter of the late Teddy Goldsmith, founder of The Ecologist magazine, and great-niece of late billionaire financier Sir James Goldsmith, was found dead in a flat in Hackney, east London, on Sunday night after paramedics answered a 999 call.

It is understood drug paraphernalia were found at the flat, which was reported to have been rented by one of Doherty's friends.

Her mother, Dido Whitehead, is a cousin of Jemima Khan and Zac Goldsmith, and her father is 1960s filmmaker Peter Whitehead.

In a statement, her parents said: "Robyn had an exceptional capacity for compassion and for love both to her family and close friends and to all those whom she touched.

"This was reflected in the depths and passion of her art.

"To lose her so young and so far before her life's work was done is heartbreaking.

"We would now ask that the media respects our privacy while we try to come to terms with our bereavement."

A Scotland Yard spokesman said her death was not being treated as suspicious.

Miss Whitehead recently completed a documentary film The Road To Albion, about Doherty's former band The Libertines, and spent a lot of time with the singer.

Her website shows pictures of Doherty with his body encased in plaster, lying on a board in a crucifixion pose.

Miss Whitehead's death came as Doherty was once again back in court on drug charges on Tuesday

The 30-year-old Babyshambles singer escaped with a £750 fine with £85 costs despite "stupidly" walking into a court with 13 wraps of heroin in his pocket.

He was arrested before Christmas in the corridor of Gloucester Crown Court, moments after he had been fined for careless driving, and was escorted from the premises when security guards saw the class A drug had fallen from his pocket.

District Judge Joti Boparai ruled that as Doherty was paying for drug treatment privately, it would not be worth taking money from the "public purse" to put him on a rehabilitation order.
