Daniel Day-Lewis is to receive an honour from the British Independent Film Awards
Hollywood star Daniel Day-Lewis is to receive an honour from the British Independent Film Awards.

The two-time Oscar winner - star of films such as There Will Be Blood and Gangs Of New York - will be presented with the Richard Harris Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Film by an Actor at the glitzy ceremony on December 6.

His British films include In The Name Of The Father, My Beautiful Laundrette, and My Left Foot.

Leading the nominations this year is Andrea Arnold's Fish Tank with eight nods, followed by Moon with seven nods, and An Education, In The Loop and Nowhere Boy, all with six nominations.

Johanna von Fischer and Tessa Collinson, BIFA Directors, said: "We have had a record number of films submitted this year, with the pre-selection committee viewing over 200 films. A highlight from the nominations is the very strong debut director category."

Up for Best Actress are Abbie Cornish (Bright Star), Carey Mulligan (An Education), Katie Jarvis (Fish Tank), Sophie Okonedo (Skin) and Emily Blunt (Young Victoria).

Aaron Johnson (Nowhere Boy), Andy Serkis (Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll), Peter Capaldi (In The Loop), Sam Rockwell (Moon), and Tom Hardy (Bronson) will battle it out for Best Actor.

An Education, Fish Tank, In The Loop, Moon and Nowhere Boy are up for Best British Independent Film.

The 12th annual British Independent Film Awards, celebrating independent filmmaking, will be hosted by James Nesbitt at The Brewery in London.
