Cory, 31, was found dead at a hotel in Vancouver, Canada in July after taking a lethal combination of heroin and alcohol.
"I couldn't believe it," admitted Damian.
"I shot my very first scene with Cory and I got to know him very well and he was incredibly welcoming - he was the nicest guy.
"I lot of these people pass away and people say that he was a very nice guy or she was a lovely woman, he was genuinely one of the best.
"He told me about the issues he had when he was a kid and he felt very blessed that he had the chance to show other people through his own experience how to get through the whole drugs scene and how to actually be a positive influence - that's who he was.
"Whatever happened, there was a relapse there and God love him."
Damian, 21, appeared in a number of episodes of the hit teen series Glee after he won the US reality show The Glee Project, which was created by the show's producers.
And the young star told Sarah he was very much looking forward to what he had in store for the future.
"There is a big 18 month plan in the pipeline, which I am very excited for," he said.
"We are shooting to have my very first record by the end of next year.
"And there is also a bit of acting coming up as well, which is not signed and sealed yet, but I am keeping my fingers crossed.
