Benedict Cumberbatch has been named the greatest ever on-screen Sherlock Holmes in a new poll.

The actor has been wowing viewers every Sunday with his portrayal of the detective in BBC series Sherlock, and the readers of Digital Spy agree.

A whopping 58 per cent of the 2,000 people who voted named Cumberbatch as their favourite star in the role, while Jeremy Brett, who played the detective in four Granada TV series between 1984 and 1994, was in second place with 18.6 per cent.

Robert Downey Jr, the star of Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes and its recent sequel Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, was placed third, with 15.6 per cent of votes.

One interesting addition on the list was Basil the Great Mouse Detective - the lead character in the 1986 Walt Disney feature animation garnered a single vote.
