Coronation Street is set to introduce its first Muslim family in the programme's 53 year history.

The new arrivals will centre around personal trainer Kal, played by Jimi Mistry, and will arrive on the cobbles later this year.

Kal arrived in Coronation Street last month and revealed he is a widower with two children.

Marc Anwar has already been cast as Kal's father Sharif, and Corrie bosses are looking to cast Kal's mum and his two kids.

Sharif will arrive on the Street in February after Kal borrows money off his father to open a new gym in Weatherfield, and it isn't long before Sharif arrives to keep a close eye on his investment.

Producer Stuart Blackburn said: "Kal and his son and daughter live with his mum and dad so we're going to bring them on to the Street.

"And that'll be the first Muslim family that Corrie's ever had. Bizarre isn't it?"

He added: "I'm loving Kal. We've heard a lot about his kids and now we've cast his dad, Sharif, who'll be played by Marc Anwar.

"Now Kal is going to open a gym in a complex with shops and restaurants. By stealth we're going to introduce his family.

"Sharif is retired and is not rich but has made enough money."
