Coronation Street is set to go head-to-head with rival soap EastEnders after TV bosses said they were left with little option as a result of World Cup fixtures.

The Weatherfield drama, which airs on UTV, will feature a double bill on Monday 23 June with the second half-hour going up against the established 8pm edition of the BBC soap which is usually in the same slot.

It will be the first time in more than 10 years the shows have competed.

Despite criticism for the move, ITV has said it is simply fitting programmes around World Cup matches.

Programme chiefs' finalised schedules show Corrie's screenings begin at 7.30pm and continue until 8.30pm - giving the Weatherfield soap a 30-minute overlap with its Albert Square rival.

Schedulers on the main channels have tough decisions to make as they work around a range of fixtures in Brazil over the next few weeks.

A BBC source accused ITV of "deliberately creating a clash" by extending the show into an established EastEnders slot.

But an ITV spokeswoman said: "We have two World Cup matches that day so that's where it is."
