Former Coronation Street star Bill Tarmey, who played Jack Duckworth for more than 30 years, has died in Tenerife at the age of 71.

The Tarmey family confirmed that their "wonderful husband, father and brother" Bill passed away on Friday morning.

In a statement, the Corrie team said their thoughts and prayers were with Bill's wife Ali and their family at such a sad time.

The cast, crew and production team at Coronation Street are devastated to hear of Bill's death.

Coronation Street

Bill first appeared in the soap in 1979 and went on to become one of its best loved stars and half of hugely popular on-screen couple Jack and Vera, alongside actress Liz Dawn.

He only left the Street in 2010, due to health problems and to help care for his son who had been diagnosed with a brain tumour.

He had been one of the show's longest-serving actors.

Bill's fellow Corrie legend Julie Goodyear, best known as landlady Bet Lynch, paid tribute to him.

"This news is so very sad, not just for me, but for all his other friends and of course his wife Ali and all his family," she said.

"This wonderful man will be sadly missed."

Nigel Pivaro, who played Jack and Vera's trouble-making son Terry, said he was devastated by the loss of the man who had become a second father to him.

"He was a very wise and dignified man who taught me a great deal and whose counsel I came to value greatly," he said.

"He was a lovely man who cared deeply for his family and friends.

"We are all rightly bereft at the loss we will feel, knowing that the world will be a little poorer without Bill to lighten it up with his warm humour."

Long-time Corrie star Michael Le Vell, who plays Kevin Webster, also said Bill had been a "surrogate dad" since his own father passed away.

"He and Liz looked after me and got me through those early days and we've been friends ever since. My heart goes out to Ali and his family," he said.

"We knew Bill was poorly, but this is still a very great shock. I am going to miss him very much."

Antony Cotton, who plays Corrie's Sean Tully, paid tribute on Twitter saying: "Goodnight Bill Tarmey. You were the best. We'll miss you so much x"

His co-star Charlie Condou, who plays Marcus Dent, added: "I am devastated to hear that the wonderful Bill Tarmey has died.

"He was a beautiful, funny and lovely man, and he will be missed by us all."

Samia Ghadi, otherwise known as Corrie's Maria Connor, also said the veteran actor would be missed and tweeted: "I'm honoured to have known and loved him. RIP Bill xx"

Soap 'siblings' Jack P Shepherd, who plays David Platt, and Tina O'Brien, who used to play his sister Sarah, also paid their tributes.

"Just heard the news about Bills death tragic news for everyone #RIPBILL" Jack tweeted, while Tina added: "So sad to hear Bill Tarmey has died, he was such a lovely gentleman, I loved spending time in his company sending all my love to his family."

And Chris Fountain, who plays Jack Duckworth's grandson Tommy, tweeted: "Really sad to hear about bill tarmey passing away, a true Corrie legend who I wish I'd had the pleasure of working with, he will be missed x"

Northern Irish broadcaster Eamonn Holmes also expressed sadness at the news and tweeted: "RIP Bill Tarmey aka Jack Duckworth."

"Known him for many years - always remembered the small things. Ruth & I getting more like Jack & Vera."
