The former Girls Aloud singer has reportedly signed a £1.5m contract to make a comeback on the next series of the popular talent show.

X Factor creator Simon Cowell confirmed the news on Twitter on Monday night.

"It's official. Cheryl is back," he wrote in a post to his 9.5 million followers, before adding: "Most importantly she is a brilliant judge of talent."

Cheryl then shared a photograph of her pretending to throttle Simon, writing: "GUESS WHAT!! I'm baaaacccckkkkk!!!!#iMayActuallyRingHisNeck #XFactor2014 #leggooo."

Louis Walsh tweeted: "@SimonCowell: it's official. Cheryl is back. oh no! @TheXFactor."

Cheryl Cole left the X Factor in 2011 to host the US version of the show, only to be removed from her post after a short stint amid claims the audience couldn't understand her accent.

The decision caused a fall-out between her and Simon, however it appears the pair have since patched things up and are now set to appear together on the judging panel for the next series.

Following the announcment, Cole said: "I'm very happy and excited to be returning to The X Factor. I'm inspired and ready to find new talent and potential pop stars. It's going to be a fun series."

Cowell added: "I am so happy that Cheryl has agreed to join The X Factor again.

"The last time we worked together in the UK was incredible and produced some really successful artists. Obviously the plan is to do the same again... so it's back to work!"

It will also mark Cowell's return to the UK version of the show after a four-year absence.

Yawn, millionaire gets paid even more for spouting subtitled gibberish on a TV show that's long outstayed whatever little welcome it had. Anyone with an ounce of sense really care?

Bringing her back will hardly make much difference to the show. After all what has she done in the past few years? She is of no standing as a singer (compared to Adele). Why not get someone who is in the limelight
