Stars including Paris Hilton, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Eva Longoria have flooded social networking sites paying tribute to Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who died on Wednesday.

The former CEO of the company, who had been battling severe health issues in recent years, passed away in California, aged 56.

Kings of Leon's Jared Followill, reality TV star Kim Kardashian and Australian singer Kylie Minogue were among the first to take to Twitter to mourn his death.

The site has since been bombarded with messages from celebrities paying tribute to the computer pioneer, who was behind the iPhone, iPad and iPod.

Hilton writes: "So sad to hear about Steve Jobs. He was a genius and one of the most innovative people on earth. He changed the world in so many ways, " while Terminator star Schwarzenegger adds: "Steve lived the California Dream every day of his life and he changed the world and inspired all of us."

Actress Longoria also paid tribute, writing: "My heart goes out for the family of Steve Jobs. What an inspiration he was to us all and a creative visionary for the world."

Other stars to leave messages included actor Zach Braff, who wrote: "RIP Steve Jobs. A legend. A visionary innovator," while Glee's Jane Lynch adds: "We will miss you, Steve Jobs. Sent lovingly from my iPhone," and singer LeAnn Rimes comments: "RIP Steve Jobs... what an innovator. This world will miss him."

Alyssa Milano also hailed Jobs, writing: "Rest in peace, Steve Jobs. You were always a big part of my world with your special inventions. Thank you for your brain."

Pete Wentz adds: "RIP Steve Jobs. True legend," and Jared Leto similarly remarks: "RIP Steve. A true visionary." Miley Cyrus wrote: "Thank you for connecting all of us Mr. Jobs."

Film director Kevin Smith also paid his own tribute: "Steve Jobs! Thanks for never settling for the way things were during a life you spent showing us how things could be. O Captain! My captain!"
