The Duchess of Cornwall pulled a pint behind the bar of the Rover's Return during a visit to Coronation Street on Thursday.

Camilla walked along the cobbles of Weatherfield before stopping at the pub during her tour of the Granada Studios set in Manchester.

After watching the cast film a scene which will be broadcast in April, she accepted an invitation to try out the beer tap.

She said: "I hope I'm not going to spill it. Who is going to drink this afterwards? Any takers?"

Keith Duffy, who plays barman Ciaran McCarthy, complimented Camilla on her pint-pulling skills.

"That is a great head you have got there," he said.

Ryan Thomas, who plays builder Jason Grimshaw, opted to try the royal pint, after checking it was "on the house".

"In the 10 years I have been here it is the best pint I have had," he told a beaming Camilla, who is a life-long fan of the soap.

Her set visit marks the programme's 50th anniversary year.

William Roache OBE, who plays Ken Barlow, was chosen to greet her when she arrived, as the only original cast member.

Camilla called him by his character name, saying: "Ah, Ken, how nice to see you. I am so glad you are still here."

"I have been here for 50 years," he said.

"Well, that is when I started watching," the Duchess replied.

Camilla used to watch the soap with her mother, she told him.

She met several other cast members, but said she wished actress Betty Driver, who plays Betty Williams on the show, could have been there.

"I am really sad that Betty is not here with her hotpot," she said.

One cast member she seemed delighted to meet was Beverley Callard, who plays Rovers landlady Liz McDonald.

Callard struggled to walk over the cobbles in her towering stilettos and mini skirt, much to the Duchess's amusement.

Camilla, wearing a blue coat and black boots, said: "I feel rather small, I should be on my stilettos.

"I think your shoes are more dangerous than mine."

Callard replied: "I should have worn a longer skirt but I wore the longest skirt she's got."

The Duchess also met Jack P Shepherd, who plays David Platt.

She told him: "You are the tearaway. You are probably much nicer in real life."

Camilla stayed longer on the set than she was scheduled to, and told the cast she did not want to leave.

She said she would love to come back and film a walk-on part, like the cameo appearance by her husband, the Prince of Wales, to mark the show's 40th anniversary.

"It is a wonderful British institution, isn't it? What would we do without it?

"I'd like to be staying here so I can walk in and out and say I have been on."
