The funnyman sued bosses at newspaper publisher News UK for libel in January after a story was published in The Sun on Sunday in November claiming he was unfaithful while dating Jemima Khan.
Brand's lawyer, John Kelly, said on his behalf: "The allegations are entirely without foundation and of course they were distressing, hurtful and damaging to the claimant (Brand).
"Following publication Mr Brand immediately wrote to the Sun on Sunday on the very day the article came out through his solicitors Harbottle & Lewis who informed the newspaper that the claims were false, that they should be withdrawn and that an apology should be published."
The publishers refused to withdraw the story or apologise but have now accepted the claims were "totally untrue and defamatory and that these claims should never have been published".
Brand accepted "substantial" libel damages which were awarded to him at London's High Court on Thursday.
He said he will donate the money to "diverse, just and decent causes".
Brand has been dating Khan since last year.
