Susan Boyle has insisted the break-in at her home was "nothing to worry about".
The singer disturbed an intruder who was in her home when she returned to Scotland from London.
As she opened her front door a youth fled from the house.
When she went inside she noticed items had been disturbed and called the police.
The Britain's Got Talent star spent Wednesday night at a friend's house because she was uncomfortable being alone in her home in Bathgate, West Lothian, according to police.
But on Thursday she will return home. The 48-year-old was in London recording the Helping Haiti charity single.
As she returned there on Thursday, Boyle smiled, waved and gave the thumbs up to wellwishers.
"Everything is absolutely fine. It is concerning for everyone but it is really nothing to worry about. It is all under control. The police have been really good about it. Very excellent," she said.
Forensics officers spent the morning examining the door frame and the back garden of Boyle's house.
Police said a 16-year-old boy was questioned in connection with the break-in but was released without charge.
Detective Constable Brian Thompson, of Lothian and Borders police, said: "She was certainly distressed last night, she was uncomfortable with staying in her home address last night, so she stayed with a friend and returned to the address this morning.
"She is fine now. She's quite comfortable to be back in her home. Given her high profile, we can't rule out that this is something concerned with her fame. But alternatively an opportunistic thief could be a possibility as well.
"The security issues have now been addressed and she has had new locks fitted."
Police appealed for information from anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious near the singer's home at around 9.40pm on Wednesday.
The suspect is white, slim, 15- or 16-years-old and between 5ft 4in and 5ft 8in. He was wearing a dark jacket and dark trousers.
Boyle, a former church worker, became an international star when her performance of I Dreamed a Dream from the musical Les Miserables stunned the audience and judges on Britain's Got Talent last year.
Her album went straight to number one in the charts and achieved the best first week's sale for a debut.
