Rock icon David Bowie is facing a backlash from nationalist Scots after begging the country not to leave the United Kingdom during his BRITs acceptance speech.

Bowie facing backlash over Scotland

The Ziggy Stardust icon did not attend the 2014 BRIT Awards in person to accept his trophy for Best British Male on Wednesday night, and he asked supermodel Kate Moss to deliver an acceptance speech on his behalf.

After expressing his gratitude at being awarded the prize, Bowie closed his message by pleading with Scots to vote against the country's proposed departure from the UK, adding: "Scotland, stay with us."

The comment has provoked outraged reactions online from many Scots, who have branded the musician out of touch.

One critic tells the rocker to "f*** off back to Mars", in referencing his hit Life On Mars, while another angry Scot writes: "Jog on! Next time Scotland will ask if we want your worthless opinion."

Scots will vote on whether or not the country should remain part of the United Kingdom in September.

I don't see what it's got to do with Bowie anyway. All you keep hearing is "it's up to Scotland" and it is. All this scaremongering by the British government isn't going to sway the vote. Leave it to Scotland! It shows how afraid the British government are.

maybe the scots should take on board what he says, he maybe right or wrong , its up to them to vote yes or no? i think at least he has the guts to put his views and help the scots if he can to make the correct choice, this is a big decision for them to make, if they make the wrong one they cant blame him.
