U2 frontman Bono has the dubious honour of inspiring the scientific name for a newly identified spider.

Bono has spider named after him

Biologist Jason Bond of Auburn University in Alabama has discovered 33 spider breeds and he named one Aptostichus bonoi after the Irish rocker, who scored the Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.

Bond picked the name for the trapdoor spider as it was found living in California's Joshua Tree National Park, which gave its name to U2's classic 1987 album.

The scientist has previously named his insect discoveries after singer Neil Young, actress Angelina Jolie, US President Barack Obama and funnyman Stephen Colbert.
