Birds of a Feather returns for new series

The original cast of the popular sitcom Birds of a Feather have signed up for a new series, which will be broadcast on UTV.

Originally airing on the BBC from 1989 to 1998, the programme followed the lives of two sisters, played by Pauline Quirke and Linda Robson, who shared a home in the posh Essex town of Chigwell after their husbands were sent to prison.

Also returning to the series will be actress Lesley Joseph who played next door neighbour Dorien Green.

The new series will be written by the show's creators Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran and will see all three original stars film eight episodes later this year.

An ITV spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that we have commissioned a new series of Birds of a Feather and we're really excited to be welcoming Sharon, Tracey and Dorien to ITV. We will confirm more details in due course."

It is understood the series revival was offered to the BBC, but bosses only wanted to make a Christmas special.

ITV then stepped in to sign the programme up for a whole series.
