Angelina Jolie is set for her most bizarre film project to date as her latest directorial venture will be scripted by the Coen Brothers.

The filmmaking siblings have signed up to pen the screenplay for the movie star's new film about World War II survivor Lou Zamperini.

Unbroken will be adapted from Seabiscuit writer Laura Hillenbrand's 2010 novel about the Los Angeles high school track star who raced in the 1936 Berlin Olympics and then survived 47 days in shark-infested waters off the coast of a Japanese island after his plane crashed in the Pacific in 1942.

Upon reaching land, Zamperini was captured and held as a prisoner of war for two years.

Jolie took over the director's chair in December after The Hunger Games' Francis Lawrence stepped down, according to The Hollywood Reporter. She will also co-produce the film.

The project follows the actress' feature film directorial debut, In the Land of Blood and Honey, which was a critical hit in 2011.
