Last month the 36-year-old Welsh rocker pleaded guilty to the charges at the last minute just as he was about to go on trial.

He admitted to two counts of trying to rape a baby and other offences including possessing and making indecent videos of children, and encouraging a groupie to sexually abuse her own child.

During the hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Wednesday, the courtroom heard that Watkins told a female fan he was going to issue a statement on the day of his sentencing saying it had all been "mega lolz".

Christopher Clee QC, prosecuting, told the judge that Watkins had a conversation from Park Prison with a woman named Samantha on 27 November - a day after he pleaded guilty to the charges.

Watkins denied being a paedophile and expressed exasperation at the way people had reacted to his guilty pleas.

Using text-speak, he said: "I'm going to put out a statement on the 18th (December) just to say it was mega lolz.

"I do not know what everybody is getting so freaked out about."

During the conversation the singer told the fan he was innocent and only pleaded guilty to the charges in order to avoid a trial.

The singer plotted the abuse of babies with two female fans who were mothers, in a series of texts and online messages in which he spoke of his desire to "cross the line" and to intoxicate a young victim by blowing crystal meth smoke in the child's face.

On Wednesday trial judge Mr Justice Royce told him and his co-defendants that what they had done "plumbed new depths of depravity".

He is a highly dangerous and manipulative individual who preyed on his victims in a calculated manner.

Suzanne Thomas, senior Crown Prosecutor at CPS Wales

The singer was told he would serve 29 years in jail with the final six on licence.

His two accomplices, Woman A and Woman B, were jailed for 14 years and 16 years respectively.

Mr Justice Royce said: "Those who have appeared in these courts over many years see a large number of horrific cases. This case, however, breaks new ground.

"You, Watkins, achieved fame and success as the lead singer of Lostprophets.

"You had many fawning fans. That gave you power. You knew you could use that power to induce young female fans to have help satisify your insatiable lust and take part in the sexual abuse of their own children.

"Away from the highlights of your public performances lay a dark and sinister side."

After the hearing Suzanne Thomas, senior Crown Prosecutor at CPS Wales, said: "These three defendants conspired to commit appalling crimes of abuse against young and defenceless victims.

"The prosecution case was that Ian Watkins was the ringleader of this terrible conspiracy and it is right that his sentence reflects this.

"The other two defendants were active participants in the most shocking abuse of their own children. They too have received sentences that reflect their admissions of guilt for these offences."

Police are currently investigating whether Watkins committed further abuse in the US and Germany.

My view of him as an individual is that he has shown no empathy, no sympathy or any remorse for what he has done.

Detective Chief Inspector Peter Doyle

Detective Chief Inspector Peter Doyle said Watkins is likely to be confronted with new child sex abuse allegations from behind bars.

The senior policeman heading the continuing hunt for the singer's victims, and those who helped him, describes Watkins as a "committed, organised paedophile".

He said: "It's as if he just doesn't care. He has shown no remorse at any time. In my view, that potentially makes him the most dangerous sex offender I have ever seen.

"Offending against children does not get any worse. We are not talking about children of any age here, we are talking about babies. I don't know what he is not capable of."

He added: "I think that it is likely that there will be further matters put to him, and others, in due course.

"For me he is a committed, organised paedophile. I believe that he has offended against other children."
