One Direction star Zayn Malik has received death threats online after tweeting the hashtag FreePalestine to his followers on the social networking site.

The 21-year-old posted #FreePalestine on Sunday evening and it was retweeted and favourited more than 140 thousand times.

But he soon faced criticism for the post, with some extreme responses threatening to "kill" the star.

Pro-Israeli critics have accused him of being "ignorant".

A few weeks ago singer Rihanna also faced huge backlash when she posted a message of support for Palestine to her 36 million followers.

She deleted the tweet minutes later, claiming she never meant to post it as she "didn't even realise it was a tweet".
