Pop band One Direction have retracted online requests for fans to send in pictures of tattoos in their honour over fears it would encourage young fans to ask for body art.

1D retract request for fans' tattoos

The What Makes You Beautiful hitmakers want their followers to feature in their upcoming 3D movie and have been asking their devotees to detail their experiences of the group for inclusion in the film.

A message was uploaded to their social networking accounts stating: "Have a real 1D tattoo? Show us! Submit a 90 sec YouTube video to 1d3dfan@gmail.com and show us why you should be in the @1D3Dmovie."

The request sparked outrage among parents, and the message was subsequently deleted.

A representative for the band tells MailOnline.co.uk: "This tweet was posted in error and has now been removed. One Direction do not want to encourage any of their fans to get 1D tattoos."
