Máire Hendron was born and reared on a farm in Cloughmills County Antrim. She trained and qualified as a Home Economics teacher and taught in schools which include Assumption Convent Ballynahinch, St Monica's on the Ravenhill Road and Rathmore Grammar School Belfast.
She has resided in Belfast all her married life with her husband Jim who is a founder member of the Alliance Party. Since its formation she has worked for the Alliance Party, community groups and charities including the Northern Ireland Hospice. She has been active in her local church St Colmcille's, where she chaired the Parish Council for four years.
In the local government election of May 2005, Maíre was elected to Belfast City Council as the Alliance Party Councillor for Pottinger. On the Council she serves on a number of committees including the Policy and Resources Committee, Town Planning and Health and Environment Committees. She chairs the Good Relations Partnership which is responsible for allocating European funding to local communities.
