Gerry Adams was born in West Belfast in 1948. He became involved in the civil rights campaign in the late 1960s and was interned without trial in 1972. In 1983 he was elected MP for West Belfast and President of Sinn Fein, and a year later he was shot and seriously wounded.
Gerry Adams has played a leadership role in the peace process and in bringing about the political changes that have occurred in the last decade.
As MP for west Belfast Gerry Adams has been centrally involved in all of the major social and economic campaigns and initiatives of recent years.
He is a gaelgeoir, ardent Aontroim GAA supporter and writes a bi-weekly Blog for the Belfast Media Group. He has also published 13 books.
