Dissident warning

The British government spin doctors were busy after the DUP conference.

They were quite excited actually saying Peter Robinson's speech was statesman-like and helpful.

''He said some things which are very important and Shaun (Woodward) is very encouraged,'' said one trusted aid.

That was at teatime but a few hours later we learned of the attacks in Belfast and the Fermanagh shootings.

Sinn Fein had a rather different take on the DUP leader's speech.

Gerry Kelly was not best pleased but he argued the dissident attacks should act as a spur to quicken the evolution of policing and justice.

The SDLP's Alex Attwood said the devolution should happen next month and delays were encouraging the enemies of the process.

But Jimmy Spratt, a DUP member of the Policing Board, said it was essential for the Chief Constable to given every help and this included, if necessary, the use of the army.

That was hardly what Sinn Fein wanted to hear.

Still this week the British government will attempt to push the devolution issue.

Expect Gordon Brown to be fully involved after a pre-DUP conference truce.

It seems Mr Robinson has given the government encouragement.

We will see.

The government must have had the spin doctors working overtime to get anything that seemed exciting from Peter Robinson's speech. It would maybe suit the wider community if Mr Woodward would share his thoughts and encouragement with them as any speech or statement at the moment from the parties would lead one to think that the process is in slow meltdown. Would the DUP be thinking that if they were to give way on the policing and justice debate and were let down or wrong footed by sinn fein that the party would split? Sinn Fein seems to be waiting for the right time to walk and cause an election and if timed right would see unionism split three ways and Martin McGuinness become first minister and hold the dup to their democratic stance. The sdlp seem to think this and are positioning themselves with statements that reflect that of sinn feins to out green them. This has been tried before and failed. The uup (UCUNF) are short of big hitters and seem lost as to what best the tories would like as a process after a general eletion.
