Dublin has just got that bit closer.

By car that is. Going by train takes just as long as it did years ago.

Just compare the travel times. One and a half hours by car and a half hour longer by train assuming no hold-ups.

The advantage has moved to private transport at a time when concerns over global warming should be pushing all of us in the direction of public transport.

I know people will say buses can also take advantage of the interrupted journeys available by road. But just how many go by bus compared with car?

Huge road programmes remain in the pipeline. The Executive is committed to rebuilding the A5 and A8 roads. But with cuts in public spending in the offing, they may end up getting delayed.

That will prove to be of some help in the battle over climate change but it will have been brought about by a lack of money rather than a willingness to save the planet.

Tell Conor Murphy to support an hourly train service by part funding the use of available Irish Rail rolling stock which is currently in store. Every second train could then run non-stop with a 1hour 40minute schedule or better.
