Low tax appeal

The only way Northern Ireland's economy can be turned around relatively quickly is by cutting corporation tax.

That's the blunt message from a group of senior economists here.

They say Northern Ireland must match the South's low business tax regime if we are to give a big boost to the private sector and reduce our dependence on Westminster handouts.

According to analysis by the Economic Reform Group, we are subsidised to the tune of £9bn a year. That's equivalent to £20,000 for a family of four.

The team points out that despite the most generous support for business in the country, Northern Ireland remains the UK's poorest region.

Their conclusion: the grants don't work.

This initiative is something of a blow for Stormont. It essentially says current plans and those envisaged will not turn the economy around.

Utter tripe, as usual. We need to have a change of mindset, which encourages internal long term dedication to business and commericial enterprise. There are no short cuts to this.
