BT is laying a lot of fibre optic cable which will allow internet access at speeds of at least 10 megabits per second in urban areas.
The contract for the work was offered by the Department of Enterprise. It's putting in eighteen million pounds into the development while BT itself is spending thirty million.
It's expected six out of seven businesses here will be able to secure so-called next generation broadband speeds giving them a decided advantage over rival firms elsewhere.
Perhaps optimistically the Department says the technology will encourage firms to create up to a thousand jobs a year.
We are always being told that fibre is good for you. Northern Ireland business people are going to have more of it than most of their counterparts in the rest of the UK. Let's hope they can digest it all.
