In the Downpatrick area, Co Down, nearly 50 homes were affected and in Ballymena, Co Antrim around 70 homes lost power.

A spokesperson for Power NI said they were responding to faults and that the electricity network coped well with the weather.

A number of roads were closed for a time on Sunday morning as fallen trees had to be removed.

In Lisburn, the city's Christmas tree was blown over in the extremely windy conditions.

Motorists were advised to take care as some roads could still be affected by debris as a yellow weather warning for strong to gale force winds remained in place on Sunday morning.

"Roads Service experienced a very busy night, high winds brought down a number of trees which closed roads. This was mainly on the east of the Province, with Belfast, Lisburn and Co Down particularly affected," a DRD spokesperson said.

"Roads Service crews worked through the night clearing debris, and closing roads where appropriate, leaving the scene safe until first light for the clearance work to be completed."

The Holywood Road and Circular Road in Belfast have reopened, as has Main Street in Kircubbin, Co Down.

In the Republic of Ireland, crews worked through the night to restore services, but some 1,500 customers in the Republic were still affected on Sunday morning.

Many parts of England and Wales have been affected by severe flooding, with nearly 200 flood warnings in place.
