Singer Morrissey has pulled out of a planned festival performance in Mexico as he continues to battle pneumonia.

Morrissey axes festival gig

The former The Smiths frontman was diagnosed with double pneumonia while in San Francisco at the weekend, and he cancelled a gig in the city on Saturday.

He promised fans he was confident he would recover from the potentially-deadly lung condition in time for his next scheduled show at the Vive Latino festival in Mexico City on Thursday but event organisers have now announced the singer will not be performing.

A statement issued by the promoters reads: "Important notice - Morrissey Cancelled. The Vive Latino announces the cancellation of its opening day (sic), Thursday 14th March, because of the health of the British singer Morrissey... We apologise for the inconvenience that this has caused the public."

The setback is the latest in a string of health woes for the rocker - he has cancelled several dates on his current North American tour due to a bleeding ulcer and throat condition Barrett's oesophagus.

He is due back onstage in Kansas on Monday.
