Bauhaus frontman Peter Murphy has pleaded not guilty to hit and run charges after a fellow motorist alleged he rear-ended a vehicle in California on Saturday and then drove off.

An eyewitness followed the Bela Lugosi's Dead singer to Los Angeles and reported the incident to police.

Murphy was not in court on Tuesday, but he entered his plea via attorney Robert Wilson.

The rocker is charged with three misdemeanour counts of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, hit-and-run driving and possessing methamphetamine, according to a Los Angeles County Superior Court criminal complaint.

Judge Frederick Rotenberg dismissed prosecutors' fears that he might be a flight risk and released Murphy on his own recognisance, but the Bauhaus star has been banned from driving without the court’s permission.

Judge Rotenberg's declaration allows Murphy to continue with his immediate tour plans - he is scheduled to kick off his North American tour in Texas next month.
