Lee Daniels' The Paperboy and Jeff Nichols' Mud, which screened on Saturday as the festival's final competition entry, are both shortlisted for the top prize, alongside others including Cosmopolis, starring Robert Pattinson, and Killing Me Softy, featuring Brad Pitt.

McConaughey insists he is equally proud of his parts in The Paperboy and Mud, and refuses to choose a favourite between the two.

He tells the Associated Press: "I'm really, really endeared to both of them for different reasons - and they're very, very different from each other.

"I'm very honoured. I've got two films that I'm proud of, two experiences that I really loved, and I've got two characters that I really care about."
